Understanding Contact Lenses

Needing help with your eyesight can be daunting. Glasses or contact lenses, how can you know which one is right for you?

A lot of people will choose glasses over the latter option due to fears brought on by myths around contact lenses but we’re here to debunk some of those myths as well as give you some tips for wearers.

Did you know that over 60 million people worldwide use contact lenses on a daily basis? Around 75% of people who use contact lenses are 25 years of age or older and 80% of those wearers use soft lenses.

Debunked: Contact lenses will not get stuck behind your eye
This is a widespread worry; however, there is a thin membrane around your eye which prevents anything from travelling behind your eye.

Debunked: Contact lenses will not pop out your eye during activity
Today’s lenses are made so they sit comfortably in your eye and not move around, so you can continue about your day, even if that includes roller coasters or extreme sports!

Tip : You shouldn’t sleep with lenses in
Another common question we get is ‘can I sleep with my contacts in?’ - when your eyes are closed, your contact keeps the eye from getting the oxygen and hydration needed to fight bacteria, so sleeping in your contacts can drastically increase the likelihood of an infection.

Debunked: Water can harm your contact lenses
Although you may not have a sterile solution available at all times, it’s important you do not use water or saliva to moisten your contacts. Cleaning with anything but recommended solutions can cause a nasty build-up of bacteria to the eye, causing infections.

Debunked: Infections are not that common
This all may sound daunting but the reality is if your contact lenses are cleaned properly, and medical advice is followed, the likelihood of an infection is actually very minor.

When it comes to contact lenses one of the main benefits other than practicality that wearers mention is a boost in confidence and socialisation once they swapped from glasses to contacts, however, no single method is better than the other - it’s essential to find what works best for you.
